Primary Children's Hospital

Yes, we are and have been in Utah for one week now but, things haven't gone exactly as planned. We flew in last Tuesday and early the next morning Scarlet woke up with a terrible cold. We had Beano's wedding on Saturday and Scarlet cried pretty much the whole day. Sunday she had a fever of 102.4 and slept all but three hours that day. We also discovered a bulge in her Fontanel (soft spot). After talking with her pediatrician in Texas and a family friend who is a pediatrician here in Utah we took her to Primary Children's Hospital. They suspected Meningitis but before doing a spinal tap they tested her for Swine Flu, ran a Cat Scan, and gave her a catheter after finding her white cell count was extremely high. She loved the Cat Scan (as you can tell in the pics. above). It was 3:00am when she went in for it, was wide awake and was in awe with every little noise and light. After all the tests came back they said that they couldn't explain why her fontanel was bulging but, she that had a rare type of UTI. They gave her an aggressive dose of antibiotics and after eight hours her fever was gone. They are concerned that anatomically her kidneys may not be functioning properly so she has to have a series of tests when we get back to Houston.
We thought everything was good and we were in the clear for the rest of our trip. After having two doses of the antibiotics she woke up with hives on her head, neck and face. A few hours later they were all over her body. After taking her in once again they found that her oxygen levels were low and that she had definitely developed an allergic reaction to the antibiotic.
We are finally back at grandma's and hope to be here for good...they say things happen in three's so between Kai's broken arm, B's surgery, and now Scarlet we hope to be done for awhile.
Thank you for all of your prayers. :)
Dang Swine Flu...I hope we never have to wear masks again!!

I wish that I knew that you were here...I still work one night a week at Primary's and would have loved to have seen you. I am always so sorry to see loved ones there, but I am so grateful that we have such a wonderful facility to take care of our kids. Did she have a penicillin reaction? My little Ellie had one and it was horrible. Miss you and love you much.

When I first looked at your blog and saw the picture of the CAT scan, I almost died...my first thought was "not again!" So sorry to hear about little Scarlett! Glad that they were able to get her fever down and that she is doing better. Keep us posted on how the tests go, and then I hope you get a long break from hospitals!

Seriously? I am so sorry Alyssa. You have had more than your share of medical stress this year. I hope you get a long, long break. Hang in there! My sister's daughter has the urinary reflux and she is just fine and healthy.

I hope everything goes well. Adam Jr. had some of the same symptoms when he was two, and had to have a ton of tests run, thankfully everything worked out and he was fine. Hopefully she'll have the same outcome! Good luck!!!

Alysa,
I am a friend of Stacy's we lived in Texas 3 years ago. I noticed your post from Stacy's blog and clicked on it because it mentioned Primary Children's. My little girl Sophie was taken to Primary Children's when she was 15 days old because of a high fever. They also suspected meningitis. After a spinal tap, a million blood tests and 2 days in the hospital they found out she also had a really bad UTI. They found after some testing that she has something called urinary reflux. This is where some of her urine can back up into her kidneys. She takes a antibiotic every day to prevent it. I read your little Scarlet's story and it sounded so much like what we went through that I wanted to share. If you would like any more info I would love to share what we have gone through. My Email is stacy1103@msn.com
Good luck, hope you have a safe trip home!

Oh sooo sorry. That is not a way to spend a vacation. I hope that she is ok. That is always stressful when you find out there might be something wrong. She seems like a fighter. Way to be so calm..

Wow, what a scare, and while away from home, too! I am glad things are better now and hope all is resolved soon. Sorry to hear that there have been so many incidents lately for you guys, but I know you are doing alright, you're so strong! Nicholas also developed hives after anitbiotics for an ear infection and we found he has a penicillin allergy. No fun. Good luck through it all!
